Red Mage?
I'm not sure crafting is really something we should be looking into until we know how the inventory is going to work. Until now, we just sort of assumed anybody who had been to a town or found a cache of items had a reasonable supply of potions and things they needed like that.

^Red Mage is one of the special classes I'm working on including. And for those who are wondering (if there are any of you <_<), no, it isn't just Black Mage + White Mage - being effective at either.

Black Mage + White Mage - being effective at either. Dude; if you can pull off a successful Red Mage...you'll become a God.

well, it is going to be a difficult class to earn if i understood correctly. that being said, it shouldn't be that hard to pull off... but then again, i am not doing most of the work... so...

i don't remember a red mage in IX. I remember a blue mage, but that was just... interesting at best. could be wrong though. haven't played that game in forever.

I think he meant XI. In that, Red, Black, and White mages had different effectiveness ratings with various types of magic (healing, attack, buffs, debuffs), so a White Mage subbing Black Mage wasn't necessarily as effective as a Red Mage, who could still then sub a more physically-oriented class to fall back on. In fact, there were some spells that White/Black mages didn't even have access to that Red Mages did. Refresh immediately comes to mind (think Regen, but for MP). I intend to do something similar here - RMs will have some exclusive abilities, as well as being able to select some from the other magic trees.
