Vivi ran hoping that his friends were following. The Mist was thick and finding his way became even harder and harder. Before long his speed was reduced to a normal walk, otherwise he would run into a tree.
Looking around for a landmark that he could base his direction off of, he saw that he still had the mountains to his left. that meant, he hoped that he was still headed in the right direction.
But that is when Vivi started to notice the different color of the Mist. It was becoming darker and darker as he continued on. The smell was becoming more and more clear. Smoke. Something ahead of him was burning.
As he walked he began to see the outlines of buidlings. but he could also start to see the orange hue of flames. It looked like the entire town was burning. He did not see anyone running around. Almost if the town had been burning for a while.
"Where is this place?" Vivi asked still alert for monsters spawning from the wretched Mist around him.

Tifa ran, following the mage. For a little guy, he sure moves fast she thought, legs pumping against the earth. Noises behind her made her hopeful yet nervous. They sounded like more feet, and she prayed it was Cloud. She knew if she stopped to face whatever it might be, she risked losing sight of Vivi, and then she would be lost.
Eyes constantly moving and searching the surroundings, she coughed. It didn't register at first, the tickling in her throat, until the distinct smell of burning tickled her nose and caused her eyes to water. She glanced over her shoulder to find Cloud with her eyes, and nearly ran over Vivi.
Tripping, she went down to one knee with a grunt. "Why are we..." her voice trailed off as memory slammed home.
It was her worst dream, come back to life, a nightmare to relive again. A fist clenched her heart as she sagged, eyes taking in the sight. Her home, burning. Cloud's home, burning. Nibelheim, burning. And rearing darkly against the evening sky was Mount Nibel. The reactor was there. The reactor where her father had been murdered by Sephiroth, where Sephiroth had tried to kill her too.
Quivering with more emotions than she could put a name to, tears streamed down her cheeks. She could see nothing, not Vivi, not Cloud, only the flames spouting high from the buildings and the heat of the fire searing more than her skin.
"How...?" She asked, her voice painfully strained. Talking took effort, and she didn't know if she wanted to scream or fall to the earth and cry until Nibelheim stopped burning. "How is this possible?"

Struggling, with the still tickling pains from the small spear-like spines that had been fired at him from earlier, Valentine managed to continue to follow Cloud, Tifa and the small, mage, who seemed to be named Vivi to a place he recognised...but his eyes, they couldn't believe the sight.
"Nibelheim?" he questioned, completely abashed by his very eyes, and what they were taking in. He remembered when he used to live and spend his time, at Nibelheim, and he remembered his little, awakening, deep underground below the mansion of Nibelheim's ShinRa based scientists. From his coffin. But what he was seeing before him was Nibelheim after Sephiroth's rampage. That was terrifying in itself. The destruction he caused in moments?!
"This...can't be how it all happened. And I slept beneath this all, as it occured...madness." he cried, startling anyone whom who think of him as remaining quite silent for the most of everything. Obviously, something had struck a nerve within him.
((AH! I posted, but you can poke me anyway...pokes are cool xD))

"This is the past. I...have seen this before. More than once."
Cloud said, his voice strained to contain his uneasiness. It was rare for him to lose his composure like this...But then again, he never did have a good track record reliving things that had already passed...
"This is how it happened. But...You're right Vincent. It did indeed concern madness."
Cloud carefully reached out a hand to the flames, noticing something odd; it wasn't warm. He touched it, his hand passing through with ease.
"It's...Not real?"
Cloud stomach twisted into a knot as the sense of Deja Vu washed over him.

Cloud's calm voice jerking her from her pained horror, Tifa watched him, stunned as his hand passed through the flame without being burned. Brushing tears from her stained cheeks, she looked around.
"So this....is a dream? Or are they all ghosts?" She asked, her voice shaking. The few people rushing about didn't seem to see the group of four watching the scene. A sudden thought occured to her.
"Or...are we the ghosts?"
Tifa rose uneasily, legs trembling. Looking to Vivi, Vincent, and Cloud, she inhaled deeply. "What do we do? Can we...affect this?" She gestured at the burning town. "Stop it?"
She moved closer to Cloud, standing next to him, huddled in on herself. Watching her home burn again was almost too much. She looked up to him, and asked in a whisper, "Do you think we can save them? Save my father?"

Vivi watched as Cloud and Tifa talked. It seems as though they knew this place well. Especially Tifa. Vivi, determined to find answers, whether to his own questions or to others, started to walk forward.
"Excuse me?" He tried to ask a person rushing by, but the man payed no attention to him. Almost as if he had never existed. He looked back to Tifa and Cloud. "I don't think we can do anything to help them" Vivi proclaimed. As soon as he said it, a saddened weight sunk on his shoulders. For once again, for the countless time, Vivi felt powerless.

Vincent felt a determination of vigour well up within him. Something in his mind told him that there was something terrible occurring. And that terrible deed, wasn't what they were witnessing alone. He felt something tug at his consciouness, as though trying to communicate with him. He tried to ignore it, but felt it tug even harder. Could it have been the monster inside him? He clutched at his chest, the wound from those creatures spines making him curl forward in agony even greater than the brush with the other consciousness.
He put his clawed hand to the ground, to prevent himself from collapsing entirely. 'Vincent...let it out. You know this aggravates you intensely so.' came a somehow familiarly, mocking tone from within his own mind. He tried to shake it off, leaving it to paranoia. But again, he heard the mocking and resilient voice resound again. 'Oh Vincent, you can't get rid of me. I am part of you. And you should release me. This place makes you feel something traumatic, doesn't it? Are you stressed Vincent? Oh...poor man. You remember it vividly, don't you?' Leave. 'Oh? Did I strike a nerve?' Leave. 'I'm offended. That's not a nice way to speak to an old friend. Someone needs to calm you down. So, until then...I'll leave you alone. But always remember...I'm here. Whether you like it or not.'
A moment passed, and Vincent felt the omnipotent presence leave his consciousness. He could feel himself swaying gently, re-focussing after that unwanted mergence of they're separate entities. It hadn't occurred to him that that could happen, because he'd never felt something like that before.
"I don't think we're the ghosts Tifa. This town has been haunted since that day, but it's different to what I remember." Vincent spoke, as he slowly rose, his red cape flowing in the slight breeze. "We should continue. Nibelheim doesn't know we're here. This is different to the Nibelheim I recall." he said to Cloud

"Agreed, but I don't think it doesn't know we're here. Perhaps it is just ignoring us."
Cloud said, cautiously taking a step forward. He stopped, then turned to Tifa.
"There is nothing we can do, Tifa. This already happened. However..."
Cloud turned towards the Nibel mountains. Perhaps...Well, they needed to go through the mountains anyway. Might as well see if his memories were still true...
"We need to pass through the mountains to get to the other side. There's...a place along the way I would like to visit."
