History: Celes knows very few of the details surrounding her birth, but she has been led to believe that she was not born, but pieced together in a genetics lab, presumably with many other experimental people. She was "raised" by Cid, the lead geneticist at Vector's laboratory, who provided her with as loving a home as was possible under such cold circumstances. During this time, Celes learned such useful skills as independent thinking and resourcefulness. When she was eight years old, her innate ability and strong will caught the attention of Kefka, who had recently been the subject of the first attempt to infuse magitek into the blood of a human. Impressed by Celes' skills, Kefka used his influence to ensure that she would become the first official Magitek Knight to fight for the Empire.
She was a faithful and loyal soldier for most of her career with the Empire, until the day the truth about Kefka was revealed to her. She learned that he was preparing to poison Doma Castle, killing all of its inhabitants, including soldiers of the Empire who were currently being held as prisoners of war inside the castle. Curious, she did some more snooping around and discovered that many such evils were being performed and condoned right under the Emperor's nose. In a sudden fit of rage, she fled Vector and headed for Doma Castle to warn them of the impending attack. She was captured in relatively quick order, and taken to recently-occupied South Figaro for what they called "quiet questioning." They chained her to a wall and beat her mercilessly, trying to incite from her the names of her fellow conspirators (of which there were, of course, none).
It was here in this dungeon that she was discovered by Locke, who rescued her and took her with him on the journey that would eventually undo the world. While she didn't find herself particularly captivated by any of her new companions (with the exception of Locke himself, whose chivalry took her by continual surprise), she felt a common bond with all of them as they battled their hated enemy: The Empire, and ultimately, Kefka himself.
After Kefka's rash actions tore the world asunder, Celes awoke alone on an island with Cid, who was terribly ill. Weak from losing a full year to a deep, frightening slumber, she nursed Cid back to health, took the raft he'd built, and escaped to the mainland, and a changed world. After painstakingly reassembling their team piece by piece, Celes and her only friends in the world attacked Kefka where he lived, taking him down in a glorious battle that fully satisfied her need for revenge and righteousness.
After the battle, she and Locke settled quite happily in Tzen, helping to rebuild the ravaged city. Soon, however, Locke's wanderlust got the better of him, and he left with promises to return. She waited far longer than she should have, before deciding to flee Tzen and her old life forever. Before she could even finish packing, however, her world was ripped apart again, and this time Celes was a truly lost soul in what seemed to be a truly confused world.
After spending a considerable amount of time wandering this new broken planet, Celes stumbled upon the stacked city of Midgar. Almost immediately, she had a perplexing but useful encounter with Tseng, whom she gathered was very familiar with Midgar and perhaps affiliated in some way with the mysterious "ShinRa" everyone was whispering about, and Yuki, about whom she knew little, but with whom she felt a strange bond she couldn't explain. Following their encounter, Celes decided to make her way to the ShinRa building that made up the central spire of the city, hoping that there she might find some answers.
She didn't find her answers right away, but she did find Tseng and Yuki. Before she could even explain herself, however, Tseng immediately offered her a position working under him at the powerful company. Unsure what sort of help she could give, she sensed his desperation and accepted his proposal. On their way to their first mission (the investigation of certain strange-looking creatures who infiltrated Midgar and abducted several of its citizens), Tseng presented Celes with a Hardedge and a Ziedrich Bangle, both of which would prove very useful in the future.
