I know we have an OOC map of the world right now with the placement of cities on it. However, I was curious if any group, organization, or individual in the game possessed an accurate map of th world. If so do they have it because of intelligence sources and basic information gathering? Do they have it because the change to the world also updated any maps of the terrain? Also has there been any contact between the cities, are the governments in disarray due to missing personnel and leaders, or is the situation business as usual because the world has always been like this?
The main reason I ask is because heading to the Shinra building is Tseng's next goal, and I was wondering if he'd come across anything strange like that there. I know that someone mentioned the Shinra tower is currently in disarray with so many members of the staff missing so that's covered, but the maps are something of interest. Also, does the train work or am I in for a long climb?
I think some of the questions have been kind of answered already, but I am currently unable to find them while searching through the forums. Thanks again for your patience of all the strange questions I bring to bear.

One thing I can answer for sure is that trains do work. In fact, trains work better than ever - every place that has a train system is currently connected to every other available train system. So even places like Midgar, whose train system is ordinarily limited to the city, are connected with Balamb.
At least, that's what I was told some time ago. Who knows, things may have changed.

As far as I'm aware, things still work like that. The FFVIII intercontinental railway still exists, and it's connected to Midgar and any other train tracks you can imagine.
But I don't know about maps. It depends on how much of Shinra is left, really. If there's nobody around to order a scout of the area, then there probably aren't any maps. Maybe there would be satellite photos, but I don't know if Shinra has that technology. They did have the PHS, but then they also treated the Rocket Town shuttle like it was a big deal.
Esthar might have satellite photos, but I don't know if their satellites are still out there, and besides, you're in no position to get their intel.
You could always give the order to scout yourself, Tseng. You are more or less in charge of whatever remains of Shinra, after all. You could take a chopper if you wanted.

Gotcha, that answers one very important piece of the puzzle. Makes it easier than trying to climb a shiny golden highway of hope.

I edited my post, just so you know.

Thanks for the intel. Yeah, when Tseng gets to the tower he will be surprised, shocked, and definitely happy. I figure Tseng never really liked Hojo or even some of the suits and their orders. As for the chopper, thank you for reminding me about that. I totally forgot they had them even though I should have remembered. Heh, I guess I'm a little scatterbrained since arriving in Korea.

I'm going to say that there aren't currently any real maps of the world as it is. Even if there are, they're likely to be wrong in a lot of ways, given that the landscape changes now and then. There might be maps that give a general idea of where certain things are, but I imgine they'd be in the hands of the people rather than organizations like Shinra.

Alright, so basically individuals might have access to maps rather than the larger groups right now, probably individual explorers who have set out to understand the world at then? In any event, I appreciate the feedback on that though now I have yet another question that the terrain brings up. Does the PHS work in areas that are not "native" to the FF7 plane?

haha! You know, I never thought of that, but I'm going to say it works everywhere, but you'd only be able to call FF7 characters. I know it seems a little weird that it'd still be working, but... well, since you've already called Reno from quite a distance, I'd say it works.
I was going to say something witty about who's gonna pay for the long distance plan, but thought better of it. -cough-

Cool beans on ice, the PHS should be an interesting culture shock for those who never seen them before. The long distance plan though is easy enough to pay for. All you need to do is tell them that you no longer exist or bill a future self. With all the comings and goings, reality hopping could be in your favor Heck, if you are planning on separating the worlds just give them an IOU

I'M HERE! No player has a map, yet. Xenos knows where things are, but not everything since the world is constantly changing. Basically he knows where there's likely to be a city and the places that are most stable (ie: Midgar, Esthar, Junon... major cities) bur anything small could turn into something else at any time. >.< We try not to talk about that, though.
I would say that the PHS does work anywhere, but I dunno if anyone has a phone besides the VII crew. If Squall had a communicator, then it would also work. If I'm wrong and some characters DO have phones, I think that it would be possible to contact them if you could get their number...? It might take a bit of rerouting the system, but I think it could be done.
Trains rock the world, just to make things a little easier and you should have access to the chopper, since Tseng DOES know how to pilot one.

Squall wouldn't have a communicator. Nobody in FFVIII would, except maybe Laguna back in the second sorceress war. Radio waves don't work properly in FFVIII during the time period Adel is locked in space. Come to think of it, that's probably why they depend so heavily on the railway. They can't reliably use aircraft in a world where there's no way to reach the pilot from the ground. The only other people who might have communicators are the Al Bhed or, theoretically, anyone from pre-Sin Spira. I know Yuna could communicate with the Celsius in X-2.

Well long time no see Xenos, good to have you back amongst the land of the living dead (I think someone said the Apocalypse has already occurred). In any event, so the cities are all hoping about spatially as well. Hm... I wonder what a train ride would be like (or helicopter for that matter). Hey now, I have another question. Does anyone know what the effects of changing geography and times have had on the Mako supply much less the lifestream?

Mmm... Aerith and I were talking about this. Theoretically, IF there was a ShinRa with enough power to do it, the company could potentially tap into the over-full planet and absorb the Lifestream of all of the planets. Each different territory of the games have the lifeforce from that game. That's why when Aerith went to Bevelle, she heard the singing and in the FF8 realm, it didn't talk hardly at all-- because no one listens to it!
So, it would lead to DIRE effects, but ShinRa COULD pump the shit out of the Planet.

Well, I am suddenly wondering what would have happened had I chosen to play Rufus instead . So basically, the only thing stopping ShinRa right now is a lack of resources, personnel, and most importantly hierarchy. Now, I wonder what sort of Materia you could compress with the sort of gigantic reactor necessary to process the energy. Now, how big would such a reactor have to be and where the would you have to place it? Could you imagine the size of that thing? I'm glad I won't have to worry about that with Tseng .
